In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE.
Schluss mit lustig!

Imagine it’s Friday afternoon and you’re still sitting in your office in front of your computer at work (auf der Arbeit).
You need to do some extra hours because you have to finish this important project for your boss tonight (für deinen Chef heute Abend).
Next door, your colleagues have finished work and they are about to leave (sie sind dabei zu gehen).
But all of a sudden, they start chatting and after a few minutes they start laughing out loud becoming louder and louder (lauter und lauter).
You really need to focus on your task and this noise is getting really annoying (wirklich ärgerlich).
So, you go to them and say firmly:
- Jetzt ist aber Schluss mit lustig! (Now it’s finish with fun)
Or in English you might say:
- Enough joking now!
- The fun is over!
- It’s the end of the party!
Got it!?
So here’s your action step:
Imagine your German-speaking colleagues starting to make some jokes and laughing out loud in the office (im Büro)…
Look at them with an ironic smile and say:
- Jetzt ist aber Schluss mit lustig! (Enough joking now!)
- Lasst uns wieder hart arbeiten! (Let’s continue working hard!)
