Ever been in a meeting… …where someone always has to prove they’re the smartest person in the room?
You start explaining your idea. They interrupt. They correct you. They add details nobody asked for.
You don’t need a long debate. You just need one word.
In German, there’s a very direct way to describe that person.

Der Klugscheißer (Literally: The smart shitter)
In German, the word klug means smart.
That’s a good thing.
We like smart people.
But sometimes…
Someone is so eager to show how smart they are that it becomes annoying.
They correct you. They interrupt you. They explain things you already know.
In English, you might say:
- know-it-all
- smart ass
- smart-arse
In German, we combine two words:
klug and Scheiße
And that gives us:
Klugscheißer
Literally:
someone who “shits cleverness.”
And that’s exactly what we mean when we say:
Yes, it’s colloquial, because “Scheiße” means “shit” in German.
But among friends, we use this expression a lot when someone pretends to know more or be smarter than everyone else (als alle anderen).
Got it!?
So here’s your action step:
Imagine you’re in a meeting with your boss (mit deinem Chef).

You present a great new idea you’ve been thinking about.
But your German-speaking colleague Karl-Albert interrupts you, as always, explaining why your idea won’t work and how he would improve it (und wie er sie verbessern würde).
Approach him slowly and whisper softly in his ear:

Sei still, du Klugscheißer! (Be quiet, you smart ass!)
And this is what it sounds like:
