This one simple sentence will make your colleagues laugh (Mehr Glück als Verstand)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German-speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE simple sentence.

Mehr Glück als Verstand

(More fortune than intellect)

Imagine someone has achieved something great, and it might be that you’re a bit jealous of such an achievement, or you simply want to congratulate them in a more ironic way (auf eine eher ironische Art und Weise).

So you let him know that this has actually more to do with fortune (das Glück) than with his skills or intellect (der Verstand):

  • Du hast mehr Glück als Verstand. (You have more luck than intellect)

Or in English, you might say:

  • Fortune favors fools!

Got it?!

So here’s your action step:

Imagine your German-speaking colleague, Wilhelm, comes to you bragging about his new position in the company (über seine neue Position in der Firma) as the Head of the Marketing Department…

Congratulate him with an ironic smile and say to him:

  • Komm, du hast mehr Glück als Verstand! (Common, fortune favors fools!)

And this is what it sounds like:
