This one simple sentence will make your colleagues laugh (Hier spielt die Musik)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE simple sentence.

Hier spielt die Musik

(Here plays the music)

Do you remember (Erinnerst du dich) when you were at school ?

You were sitting in class and the teacher was about to explain some concepts (einige Konzepte).

But you were actually not listening to him.

You had other more important things (wichtigere Dinge) to do :-)

So, the teacher needed your attention (deine Aufmerksamkeit) and said:

  • This is where it’s at!

Or a German teacher would have said (hätte gesagt):

  • Hier spielt die Musik!

Got it?!

So when we say in German:

  • Hier spielt die Musik!

We mean:

  • This is where the action is!
  • This is where it’s at!

So here’s your action step:

Imagine you’re giving a presentation (du hältst eine Präsentation) in front of your German boss Heinrich.

In the middle of the presentation you suddenly notice that Heinrich is not paying attention to you (,dass Heinrich nicht auf dich achtet).

It seems (Es scheint) as if he had more important things to do.

Call his attention to your presentation by saying to him (indem du ihm sagst):

  • Heinrich, mach das Handy jetzt bitte aus! Hier spielt die Musik! (Heinrich, please, turn off your mobile device now. This is where it’s at!)

And this is what it sounds like:

Then, tell me in the comments below how he reacted :-)
