This one simple sentence will make your colleagues laugh (Es ist arschkalt)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE simple sentence.

Es ist arschkalt

(It is ass cold)

Well, I think it’s clear what this expression means (was dieser Ausdruck bedeutet).

I actually found an English expression that is way more fun (viel lustiger) than the German one …

And yes, it’s colloquial (umgangssprachlich), I mean “der Arsch” means “the ass”, so you get the idea.

But, we use it a lot among good friends (unter guten Freunden) to express that:

  • It’s really cold!
  • It’s bloody cold!

Got it!?

So here’s your action step:

Next time (Nächstes Mal) you go to work and it’s really cold outside…

Once you see your German-speaking colleague Rudolf in front of the door (Of course, only in case you really know him well :-)), tell him how cold it is outside (draußen):

  • Es ist arschkalt draußen! (It’s cold enough outside to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.)

And this is what it sounds like:

Then, tell me in the comments below how he reacted :-)
