This one simple sentence will make your colleagues laugh (Eine ruhige Kugel schieben)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh with ONE simple sentence.

Eine ruhige Kugel schieben

(A calm ball roll)

Have you ever (Hast du schonmal) played bowling?

Yes, the game where you have to roll a bowling ball (eine Bowlingkugel).

Now, imagine rolling a bowling ball slowly and calmly (ruhig).

Imagine you’d do this for the whole weekend (das ganze Wochenende).

Compared to your usual hectic working week this would be actually a little bit boring (ein bisschen langweilig).

Or maybe even relaxing (entspannend) :-)

And that’s exactly what we mean with this German expression.

So when we say in German:

  • Am Wochenende schiebe ich eine ruhige Kugel.

We mean:

  • This weekend I’ll take it easy
  • This weekend I’ll have a cushy job.
  • This weekend I’ll have a cushy number.

Got it?!

So here’s your action step :-)

Imagine your German-speaking colleague Günther comes to you on a Friday afternoon after finishing work (nach dem Feierabend).

And he goes:

“Was machst du dieses Wochenende? (What are you going to do this weekend?)

Look at him a little bit tired (müde) and tell him:

  • Dieses Wochenende bleibe ich zu Hause. Ich schiebe eine ruhige Kugel. (This weekend I’ll stay at home. I’ll have a cushy number.)

And this is what it sounds like:
