In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE simple sentence.
Blau sein
(to be blue)
In the picture above we can actually say:
- Die Haare sind blau. (The hairs are blue.)
So you can express this way that something is blue (dass etwas blau ist).
Another example:
- Das Auto ist blau. (The car is blue.)
The meaning is that simple when we refer to a thing (wenn wir uns auf eine Sache beziehen).
BUT … when we refer to a person and we say:
- Er ist blau. (He is blue)
We mean something totally different (etwas ganz Anderes)…
We mean:
- He is drunk!
- … juiced up
- … bladdered
Got it?!
So here’s your action step:
Imagine you’re at the New Years Eve Party with your German-speaking colleague Karl-Ernst.
It’s close to midnight and the countdown has started, but…
Where is Karl-Ernst?
Look at your other colleagues and say to them:
- Der ist total blau! (He’s drunk as a lord!)
