Ever had a colleague suddenly lose control in a meeting?
They get emotional. They start complaining. And things escalate quickly.
In German, there’s a very direct way to bring them back down to earth.

When you stand on a carpet (auf einem Teppich), you stand firmly.
You’re grounded. Stable. In control.

Now imagine the opposite.
You get angry. You get frustrated. You start reacting emotionally.

Suddenly, you’re no longer grounded.
You’re losing control.
That’s when Germans might say:
Bleib auf dem Teppich!
And that’s exactly what this expression means.
Stay calm.Stay reasonable.Keep your feet on the ground.Don’t get carried away.
Got it?!
So here’s your action step:
Imagine you’re in the middle of a team meeting (inmitten einer Teambesprechung).
Suddenly, your German-speaking colleague Gertrude stands up and starts complaining loudly about the team, the company, and how bad everything is (und wie schlecht alles ist).
Interrupt her and say:

Jetzt bleib mal auf dem Teppich, ok?!
(Come on, keep your feet on the ground!)
And this is what it sounds like:
