Say this to your German colleague when they get promoted (Gut drauf sein)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German-speaking colleagues laugh with ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE.

Gut drauf sein

(To be good on it)

Imagine it’s Friday afternoon and you’re about to finish work (Feierabend machen).

But this Friday is a special Friday because it is your last working day before going on vacation (bevor du in den Urlaub gehst).

All the tension and pressure you were feeling from all the work now starts to release, and while you’re driving home, you can’t hold it back (du kannst es nicht zurückhalten) …

You’re in a really good mood.

Ich bin gut drauf!

So when we say in German:

Ich bin gut drauf!

We actually mean:

I’m in a good mood.

I feel great.

Got it?

So here’s your action step:

Imagine your German-speaking colleague Karl-Günther got promoted (wurde befördert).

He steps into your office to tell you about it (um dir darüber zu erzählen).

Once you see his smiling face, you can tell that he’s really happy…

Look at him and ask him:

Was ist los Karl-Günther ? (What’s up Karl-Günther?)

Bist du gut drauf? (Are you in a good mood?)

And this is what it sounds like:
