#3 Engineers around Germany with Philip from the UK

This is “Engineers around Germany”, the podcast show where I interview inspiring engineers, who are working in a German speaking country telling us their story and experience with their German project.

I’m thrilled to introduce my guest tonight, Philip.

Philip is a software developer from the UK. He worked in London as a freelancer, and in 2015 he decided to move to Hamburg. Today he’s working as a developer at Mesosphere, a company that is building an operating system for the datacenter.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to start off in Germany coming from the UK with no German
  • Why many companies don’t require German
  • Why Germany is worldwide known for its Engineering
  • Why even just casual German can help you in the beginning to socialise with your colleagues
  • Why talking to a compatriot in Germany can save you time and frustration when moving to Germany
  • Why a landlord wants to meet you in person
  • How long the notice period can be when switching jobs
  • How struggling it can be to get a bank account in Germany
  • And why Germans want to know what they breathe :-)

The german gender seems tricky at the beginning right? “Der” means the, “die” means the and “das” means also the. Wow, 3 times the work for the same result. “And now I have to learn every new German noun with its gender?” NOT with these two powerful tricks.

  • Understand once and for all when and how to use the adjective endings

The German adjective declension is weird? Imagine knowing exactly when to say “groß, große, großen, großem, or großer “. To completely understanding these endings after just one lesson. Without scrolling through weird grammar books. Without memorizing tons of tables.
